    Hi Guys,

The following abbreviations are in my PS.
Using the full terms will really boost up my character count.
I'm particularly aware of the "lay people" who review Warwick's applications however.

    MMSE - mini-mental state examination
    ACE-3 Adenbrokes cognitive examination 3
    RNA - Ribonucleic acid
qPCR - quantitative polymerase chain reaction
    UCH - university college hospital

    Please advise.

I would suggest trying to keep your PS as easy to read as possible, particularly if the people reading it are laymen (like you mention) and have a zillion PS's to read a day.

Without the context, I can't say for sure, but its looks like your getting a bit technical.

I think other than the ACE-3 most docs will know what you mean. However you will risk putting people off you it you make it look like a technical essay/cv. The PS is a chance to show your empathy and com's skills. They can see you technical abilities via your qualifications.

qPCR, RNA definitely OK to abbreviate.

    MMSE not sure.

    Don't abbreviate the others.

So: from definitely abbreviate to definitely don't abbreviate: RNA, qPCR (But PCR would rank alongside RNA), MMSE, ACE-3 UCH.

Thank you guys your responses were really appreciated.
In the end I only kept RNA abbreviated.

I took UCH out and named the department
    changed qPCR to quantitation
I removed ACE-3 and used the "mini mental state examination" but indicatde there were other cognitive exams used.

    Again really appreciate the advice.
