    Heya,

I was just looking through the UCL accommodation handbook and was just wondering what any of the current medical students recommend as the best place to stay. I have a few questions, which would really help me in my choice.

Is it better to go catered or self-catered? Is en suite that important to any student? Does the long distance of some halls make it a problem to get to lectures, hang out with friends etc…which one is located closest to a gym? And finally which one is the best to stay in?

Any comments would be very welcome in my time of need!

My personal preference would be (and was, all those years ago) to go for Ramsay, a catered hall extremely close to the med school. Astor is next door to it, and is a self catered hall. As for which is better for you, it depends on whether you want to cook every day or not. Catered food isn't too bad, and there's no washing up!

En-suite rooms are an extra expense that most can do without. I don't know anyone who had them, and I don't think that they were really missed (and you're probably not gonna have one when you live in private accommodation in later years).

There are plenty of private gyms around, but the halls that are closest to the UCL and ULU gyms are Ramsay, Astor, Campbell House and the ULU halls Commonwealth, International and whatever the other of the three is.

Living further out is an inconvenience, but there are plenty of students in hall such as Ifor Evans, in Camden, and they don't seem to have problems socialising, the only nasty bit is getting in for morning lectures during rush hour.

I was just wondering if anyone knew of any methods that can help you get good accommodation? Like the tour guide at the UoL open day said we should contact all the halls individually ourselves to make sure they had vacancies etc, not just fill in the forms. Then the University of London Accommodation Office leaflet says 'It is virtually pointless writing or telephoning the [intercollegiate] Hall and a personal visit stands considerably more chance.'

I'm not sure if its just talking about applying for accommodation late though, or just normally. Just worried because I might not apply for accommodation here for a few more weeks (possibly depending on Bristol's decision), and I'm concerned all the good accommodation is gonna be taken.

But you can state preferences, so if you want Ramsay put Catered UCL hall and proximity to UCL. For Astor put Self Catered UCL hall and proximity to UCL as your biggest factor...

[edit] and well done JRP18 for being one of the few people that I've seen on this site who posts a thread on accommodation and spells it correctly!

Thanks a lot (to Spencer Wells), I knew English would come in handy some day!

Also, what are the gym facilities like in UCL – sorry I keep going on about this point but I’m just a big sport and work out junky and I need to know if I should seek a membership at a better place!
